Life is busy, and we all look for shortcuts when we can. But don’t turn your skincare regimen into a skin “scare” routine. Consider whether any of these common mistakes apply to you, and then resolve to change your ways for the better!
Sleeping with makeup on. Ok – you know you shouldn’t do it, but every now and then, falling into bed without washing your face won’t do any lasting damage. On a regular basis, however, make the extra effort and do a proper job of removing that makeup. Left on overnight, cosmetics can clog your pores, leading to breakouts or worse. Some experts say sleeping with makeup on can even increase wrinkles and lead to premature aging. To make things easier, keep a stash of makeup cleaning facial wipes on hand to get the job done in a flash.
Avoiding exfoliation. Regularly removing dead cells will do wonders to soften any wrinkles and even out your skin texture and brightness. Some OTC face scrubs are far too rough, however, making them unpleasant to use and bad for your skin (walnut shells, we’re talking about you!) Instead of scouring your face, opt for a chemical exfoliant that can be smoothed on and left overnight, like products containing glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). Finally, avoid face washes with “micro-beads” – these miniature plastic balls don’t do anything for your skin, but they DO cause environmental damage in our oceans and fish.
Using sunscreen only in summer. The sun never stops shining, even when it’s hidden behind grey clouds, making exposure to damaging UVA rays a concern all year long. They also can penetrate glass, putting your unprotected skin at risk of wrinkles and damage even when you are indoors or in a car. Choose a daily facial moisturizer that contains broad-spectrum protection and an SPF of 30 – and then use it every day, according to the skincare and beauty researchers at Adore Cosmetics.
